Chagas Disease Testing

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a multi-step approach for Chagas disease diagnosis. Serological testing, such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), is the primary method for screening individuals at risk. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays may be used for confirmation, especially in inconclusive cases or acute infections. Testing is advised for individuals with relevant travel history or clinical symptoms, and those who received blood or organ donations from at-risk donors. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for preventing disease progression and complications

At the Molecular Microbiology Laboratory at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai

We are dedicated to providing comprehensive testing services for Chagas disease. Our state-of-the-art facility offers the following testing modalities

Testing Modalities

ELISA with Recombinant Antigens

Our ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) testing utilizes recombinant antigens to detect antibodies against Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite responsible for Chagas disease. This highly sensitive and specific test is essential for screening individuals who may have been exposed to the parasite.

ELISA with Crude Extract Antigens

In addition to recombinant antigens, we also offer ELISA testing using crude extract antigens derived from Trypanosoma cruzi. This alternative approach provides complementary information and enhances the accuracy of Chagas disease diagnosis.

Pan-Stage Real-Time PCR

Our molecular diagnostic platform includes pan-stage real-time PCR testing for the direct detection of Trypanosoma cruziDNA in patient samples. This cutting-edge technology allows for the rapid and sensitive detection of the parasite, particularly in cases where serological testing may yield inconclusive results.

Parasite Genotyping

Our laboratory also offers parasite genotyping services to characterize the genetic diversity of Trypanosoma cruzistrains. This advanced testing modality provides valuable insights into the epidemiology and transmission dynamics of Chagas disease, facilitating targeted control and prevention strategies.

Our team of experienced scientists and healthcare professionals is committed to delivering accurate and timely Chagas disease testing services.
